This Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) training is designed to provide the foundational information necessary to comply with both the letter and spirit of the ICWA. The training also provides substantive law and practice skills necessary to improve outcomes for Indian children and their families. The training covers the background leading to the ICWA, the ICWA requirements, the 2016 Federal Regulations, 2016 BIA Guidelines, MIFPA and TSA.

The Children’s Justice Initiative (CJI) is holding eight ICWA training sessions across the state in 2018.  The first four trainings will be held in Duluth (Friday April 13),  Bemidji (Friday April 20), Grand Rapids (Friday May 18), and Moorhead/Fargo (Friday June 8).  Judy Nord will let you know as soon as the trainings for the southern half of the state are scheduled later this year.

The training also provides substantive law and practice skills necessary to improve outcomes for Indian children and their families. The training covers the background leading to the ICWA, the ICWA requirements, the 2016 Federal Regulations, 2016 Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Guidelines, Minnesota Indian Families Preservation Act (MIFPA), and Minnesota Tribal/State Agreement (TSA).

The trainings are FREE and we encourage CHIPS County Attorneys to attend.

Registration is now open for this program. Please register using the registration survey by the registration deadline of Monday, May 28, 2018.

Recommended Audience
All CJI team members and child protection stakeholders from Beltrami, Lake of the Woods, Clearwater, Hubbard, Norman, Mahnomen, Polk, Red Lake, Pennington, Marshall, Kittson and Roseau Counties are encouraged to attend, including judges, court administration staff, law clerks, county attorneys, social workers, attorneys for parents and children, guardians ad litem, and tribal representatives.
