NAGTRI’s Center for Ethics & Public Integrity (CEPI) is pleased to announce that Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law will host this year’s Ethics Summit. The Summit will feature both open and closed sessions, and ASU law students will be permitted to attend the open sessions at no cost. Please find details below. If you or anyone in your office has any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Molly Flanagan at mflanagan@naag.org.

For the first time, a full day of the Ethics Summit will be open to attorneys from the private sector, as well as lawyers at attorneys general offices and other government entities. The Summit will provide this diverse group an opportunity to learn about and discuss ethics issues facing lawyers. Government attorneys will have the opportunity to join their counterparts at attorneys general offices for an additional half-day to discuss, in closed sessions, matters of interest to prosecutors and to those who represent the government in civil litigation. Meals and CLE credit are included in the registration fee.

This Ethics Summit is a two-and-a-half day opportunity for AGO ethics gurus to join with public and private sector attorneys to learn about and discuss common ethics issues that arise for lawyers.

This year, the first day of the Summit is open to private-sector lawyers and law students, as well as public-sector attorneys. The first half of the second day is open to only public-sector/ government attorneys (including AGO attendees). The remainder of the Summit will be open to only AGO attendees.

Topics that will be addressed include:

Open Sessions: ethical issues involving the use of outside counsel by AGOs;

Government Sessions: separate sessions addressing ethical issues facing prosecutors (like complying with discovery and disclosure requirements) and those facing civil government attorneys (like squaring attorney-client privilege and open-records requirements); and

AGO-Only Sessions: small-group breakouts providing instruction on and an opportunity to discuss various topics, including conflicts of interest issues that may arise in AGOs.

The training will begin the morning of Tuesday, December 11, 2018, and end at 12:30 pm on Thursday, December 13, 2018.

If you are interested in attending this program, you must submit an online nomination. If your office has an internal procedure for selecting nominees, please consult with your training coordinator or chief deputy/chief of staff before submitting an application. All nominations are due by COB Monday, October 15, 2018.

In order to be considered for a scholarship, the nomination must be approved by a training coordinator or chief deputy/chief of staff. Once a nominee completes the nominations form, the training coordinator or chief deputy/chief of staff will receive a message via email to approve or deny the nomination. Failure to complete this step will result in an automatic disapproval.

Applicants should not make any travel arrangements until they have been accepted. NAGTRI will send each accepted applicant information that will allow him or her to make travel reservations through a travel website.

We ask that those submitting a nomination for a scholarship do not register through the paid system until they have received notice on the status of their nomination. Registration for this program will open next week.
